About

Established in 2005, we aim to be one of Australia’s premier resources for providing joyful music education experiences that promote artistic excellence. All of our programs are given in easily accessible, attractive and comfortable spaces that enable maximum musical enjoyment by both participants and teachers alike.

 

We offer students tuition in a large variety of disciplines – violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, voice, percussion and music theory. In addition to private lessons, students are given regular performance opportunities as well as the possibility to take part in our various ensemble programs.

Tom Penn-Davies

Director

Tom is the founding director of Virtuosi. Aside from supervising the day to day running of the school, he also coordinates our ensemble programs, masterclasses and recitals. As the lead teacher, Tom works closely with all teaching staff to ensure each student recieves the highest level of tuition. 

Errisya Marliani

Student Administrator

Errisya has been involved with Virtuosi since its inception in 2005. Errisya is in charge of the school's administrative duties and, with her background in accounting, helps maintain the school's accounts.

Lessons at Virtuosi
LESSONS
Tuition

Private lessons are the cornerstone of our educational offerings, and we welcome students of all ages, abilities and levels of experience. The School strongly believes that the right match of student and teacher is vital to a student’s progress, pleasure of learning and enjoyment of music.

WEEKLY LESSONS

Private instruction is the core of music education and weekly lessons are offered for adults, teenagers, and children aged 5 and older, at all levels. Weekly lessons require a commitment from the student as well as from the family. 

 

 

EXAMS

At Virtuosi, students can choose to participate in the AMEB examinations series. This helps motivate students by giving them a goal to work towards as well as a sense of accomplishment. The AMEB exists to provide a graded system of examinations in music, speech and drama, offered nationally and internationally, by providing quality syllabuses, educative services to our teachers, examiners and candidates, and quality publications to the highest editorial standard.  Students will be given the opportunity to partake in practical, theory, musicianship and music craft examinations.

 

 

CASUAL LESSONS

We realize that for some of our students (especially adults) committing to weekly lessons can be quite difficult. We therefore offer casual lessons packages so that lessons can be scheduled at a time that fits in with life’s busy schedule. Simply phone or e-mail us to make a booking when the time is right.

 

 

DUO LESSSONS

Apart from private tuition, we are now offering duo lessons in guitar or voice. Duo lessons are offered to beginner students as a short term introduction to learning the basics. Our classes are designed for a parent and child, two siblings or two friends.

 

ENSEMBLES

At Virtuosi, we offer our advanced students the opportunity to take part in chamber music. Ensemble programs provide a special opportunity for students to socialize with one another via the language of music. Students flourish as they develop a camaraderie with their ensemble partners, a sense of responsibility to the group and pride in their accomplishments. Participants are placed with students who share a similar level of experience and ability.

PERFORMANCES

Throughout the school year, all students will have the option to perform on stage at various performance venues throughout Brisbane. This is where students, parents and teachers share and celebrate all their hard work and success!

 

In addition to our student recitals, some of our more advanced students will be invited by their teachers to compete in various eisteddfods and competitions held in Brisbane throughout the year.

Teachers

At Virtuosi, we pride ourselves on our faculty's depth of study and professional experience. Our teachers have all studied music at a tertiary level with many achieving post graduate qualifications. Faculty members regularly perform at professional engagements and several have competed in competitions at a national and international level.

Sarah Fields

Guitar

Sarah Fields ventured into the world of music at a young age, upon noticing a bright pink guitar displaying at her local print music shop in Townsville. Her impulsive desire for the instrument has since grown into a passion for performing and educating as a classical guitarist. Currently completing a Bachelor of music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Sarah is guided by internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Karin Schaupp. She is also a valued member of the Riverside Guitar Ensemble, who have performed in events at the Adelaide Guitar Festival and Australia Digital Concert hall. Sarah admires the narrative potential of music, inspired by her love for reading and all things fantastical, and wishes to impart that same joy of storytelling through music to her students.

Andrew Cui

Clarinet & Saxophone

Andrew grew up in Sydney, where his musical journey began at the age of 6, learning the Piano and Clarinet. In 2019, he attained his AMus in Clarinet, and in 2020, he graduated from high school achieving a Band 6 in Music 2. Currently, Andrew plays in the Queensland Medical Orchestra, and previously has been a member of the Sydney Wind Orchestra and the Western Sydney Youth Orchestra. During his high school years, he expanded his skillset to the Alto and Tenor Saxophone, participating in multiple jazz bands and musical orchestras. With his experience in solo and orchestral playing over the years and his dedication to teaching students of all ages, Andrew endeavours to gain a shared passion for music with his students.

Elena James

Violin & Viola

Hailing from Townsville, North Queensland, Elena has had many years of orchestral and soloistic experience, notably with the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Australian Vocal and Concerto Competition, and the Barrier Reef Orchestra. She currently studies a Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland, having previously studied two years of Bachelor of Music (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts, under the tutelage of renowned violinist, Adam Chalabi. Elena previously held the position of Assistant Concertmaster of the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Principal Second of Pulse Chamber Orchestra; received the prestigious Paula and Tony Kinnane Music Scholarship; attained her A.MUS.A at the age of 15; and has attended various Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camps, playing as a first violinist. Elena is currently playing first violin with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mackinlay Carr

Guitar

passion for jazz and a versatile background in various other genres. Born in Rockhampton, Mackinlay has moved to Brisbane to complete his Bachelor of Mathematics at the University of Queensland and his Diploma in Musical Theatre at the Queensland College of Dance. Mackinlay brings his diverse musical experience and love for music to his teaching, committing to helping his students discover their own musical journey. He believes strongly in fostering strong technical and theoretical foundations, exploring one’s musical passions, and diversifying taste as to develop keen musicianship and a passion for one's own craft.

Annie Rose Paroz

Voice & Piano

Annie Rose is currently studying a Bachelor of Music studies degree in Classical voice at the University of Queensland, completing this at the end of 2024. She has been singing and playing piano for over 15 years, and has had over 5 years of experience teaching styles such as Classical, Contemporary, Music theatre and Jazz. At university in 2023, Annie Rose was selected as a finalist for both the Margaret Nickson prize, and the Ethel Osborn prize, played principal roles in varius operas and projects, and was also selected to be part of Opera Queensland's Festival of Outback Opera. Annie Rose has a passion for sharing her love of music, and loves to create a fun learning environment to inspire creativity and self expression within each student.

Zachary Lazarevski

Piano, Voice & Guitar

Zachary Lazarevski has studied at some of Australia’s most prestigious music schools, The Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, and The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He is an experienced pianist, guitarist and singer who loves to teach classical, jazz and pop. His students excel at music reading, improvisation, learning by ear and songwriting. He can also teach singing and piano or guitar together. He has taught music for over 10 years to hundreds of students, for thousands of hours. Zac has many outstanding five-star reviews from students, here are a few: “Zac is a fantastic teacher… the improvement in my voice is crazy.”- Chad. “Zac is an exceptional teacher that goes above and beyond.” - Cameron. “We are so happy with Zac. He is a fantastic musician and piano teacher.” - Mimi. Zac can help students achieve excellent results in AMEB exams or the internationally recognised Rock School popular music exams. Sophie Li

Piano

Sophie is a talented pianist with over 15 years of experience playing as well as experience tutoring. Originally from Hamilton, New Zealand, she attained her DipABRSM in 2018, has won multiple competitions and has had the opportunity to play with Aotea Youth Symphony orchestra in New Zealand. Her strengths lie in teaching both kids and adults and she believes that success is born through fostering a passion for music.

Luke Carrol

Cello

Luke is a talented cellist with over 14 years of experience playing the cello. Luke is from Townsville and has a vast range of both orchestral and solo experience. In 2021, Luke attained his AmusA and in 2022 was awarded the most outstanding musician from North Queensland in the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition. Luke believes teaching is about fostering a strong passion for music and enjoys helping others find this.

Ran Luo

Piano, violin

Ran is originally from China and has been studying in Australia since high school. She is currently in her second year of studying dual degrees in Music (Honours) and Education (Secondary) at the University of Queensland. She began her music career at age 7 on the ocarina and has been playing violin and piano for over 12 years. Ran has extensive experience in orchestra, chamber music, and gigs. She is also a member of the Pulse Chamber Orchestra, the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and previously a part of the Queensland Youth Orchestra and Western Suburbs String Orchestra. Ran is passionate about her teaching career and loves working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Helen Au

Piano & Flute

Helen first started playing the piano at the age of 5 and has completed her ABRSM Grade 8 exam at young age. She has also completed her music and psychology studies at the University of Queensland. She has much passion in music therapy - the effect that music education has on children’s psychological development in particular. Not only she plays the piano, she also plays the violin and the flute. She is experienced with AMEB graded exams for students and successfully helped students get through their graded exams with excellent results. She committed to teaching in an encouraging and positive environment, and a strong passion for working with and sharing the joy of music with young children.

Lyoko Meyers

Flute

Lyoko holds a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has been playing classical flute for over 20 years. She has a love of teaching and has worked with an array of flute students from beginner standard to university level. She also has extensive experience in teaching the AMEB flute criteria. Prior to the pandemic, Lyoko was completing a Post Graduate Diploma at the Sydney Conservatorium where she was Principal flute player in the University Orchestra. Lyoko has also studied the Alexander Technique which she uses with students to combat performance anxiety, harness technique and musicality simultaneously and, more importantly, nurture a student's unique playing stye..

Alexandra Mison

Piano

Originally from Lismore, Alexandra moved to Brisbane in 2018 to commence her studies at the University of Queensland, where she is undertaking a Bachelor of Music (Honours)/Bachelor of Science dual degree. In 2015, she completed her Certificate of Performance for piano and in 2019 she completed her AMusA. Alex has studied piano under the tutelage of Dr. Anna Grinberg and Mr. Max Olding, and is currently studying composition. She is also a member of the UQ Chorale.

Tom Penn-Davies

Violin & Viola

Tom graduatated from the University of Queensland in 2001 where he studied violin with Spiros Rantos and was first violinist with the UQ Symphony Orchestra.  Tom holds dual degrees in Commerce and Arts as well as an Associate Diploma in Violin.  As a university student, Tom began teaching the violin both privately and at a number of schools in Brisbane. After graduation, Tom's passion for teaching led him to further his studies in pedagogy in both violin and viola. A keen orchestral musician, Tom has held principal positions with the Queensland Youth Sympnony Orchestra and Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra. Tom has also performed with the newly formed Brisbane Chamber Orchestra which is comprised of former students and staff from the University of Queensland's School of Music. Apart from teaching, Tom has a particular love for chamber music and mentors several string ensembles at Virtuosi. With over fifteen years of teaching experiennce, Tom has successfully prepared students for orhestral, high school and univesity auditions and his students constistently achieve excellent results in AMEB examinations.

Sophia Van der Gulik

Voice, Piano

Originally from New Zealand, Sophia made the move across the ditch to complete a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium. With 12 years singing experience, Sophia is well educated in most genres, including pop, jazz, music theatre, classical, funk, rock and rnb. She is also very experienced in ensemble work, having been a member of the prestigious conservatorium jazz vocal ensemble ‘In-Voices’ during her undergrad and having been cast in both lead and ensemble roles in musicals growing up. Back in her homeland, Sophia had great success competing at national singing competitions, and also attained Grade 7 performance singing as well as Grade 6 classical piano and Grade 5 music theory. With her competitive streak behind her, nowadays Sophia loves nothing more than sitting at the piano and writing a song. Paralleled with this is her passion for passing her musical knowledge onto others, which she strives to do so in an encouraging manner that places the student’s individual interests at the forefront of learning.

Emly Winter

Cello

Emily Winter is currently pursuing her twin interests of music and writing at The University of Queensland, under the tutelage of cellist Patrick Murphy. She is passionate about educating the next generation of musicians and fostering a love of music in a welcoming learning environment. She has over five years’ teaching experience, specialising in cello (AMEB Grade 8) and music theory (AMEB Grade 5). In 2021 she made her solo debut at The Gap Soiree and was a recipient of first place in the 4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Prize in Chamber Music, as a member of the Heiterkeit Trio, in which she also performed as a finalist in 2022s. She spent two years with the Queensland Youth Symphony and has performed with contemporary music group Nonsemble. She currently plays with the Pulse Chamber String Ensemble, UQ Symphony Orchestra, and Sketch Ensemble at the University of Queensland, which explores the works of emerging composers.

Anna Yang

Violin

Anna was awarded her AMusA in violin in 2016 and is currently in her final year of study at the University of Queensland where she is completing a dual degree in Music (Honours) and Education. Anna has been privileged to study with the renown violinist and pedagogue, Adam Chalabi, with whom she wishes to her Masters Degree under in 2024. Anna is currently first violinist with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra and has played previously with the Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Ensemble Q.

Marchia Yodhian

Piano

Marchia Yodhian is an experienced piano and music theory teacher, with over a decade of teaching experience. She holds a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from West Virginia University (USA), where she also earned her Bachelor of Music degree with a Magna Cum Laude distinction. Her academic background includes coursework in Music Theory, Music History, and Piano Literature. Marchia has previously served as head of the piano and theory departments at two music schools, where she created syllabi and prepared exam questions. She has also been appointed as a piano examiner for local music school exams. She has experience teaching children of all ages and has helped many of her students succeed in ABRSM exams and piano competitions. Her teaching style is tailored to the individual needs of each student, with a focus on building a strong foundation in music theory and technique.

Virtuosi follows the Queensland State School term timetable. We are closed on Public Holidays however we operate as usual on Student Free Days. Please let us know If you are interested in attending lessons over the school holidays as many of our teachers are still available for lessons.

DISCOUNTS

Additional family members who enrol in weekly lessons will receive 5% off their tuition fees. Discounts are offered to all immediate family members including parents.

 

Students who enrol in two or more weekly private lessons will receive 5% off their tuition fees for each additional lesson.

ENROLMENT POLICY

All tuition fees are billed in advance at the beginning of each term with payment due within seven days. (Alternative payment plans may be arranged on a case by case basis).

 

Mid-term enrolments are billed for the remaining weeks in the term.

                      

All invoices are sent via email and can be paid via direct deposit, cheque, cash of EFTPOS (credit card payments can also be made over the phone).

 

Payments cannot be refunded once a student has commenced their enrolment.

 

Upon completion of a term, a student will be re-enrolled at the same lesson time for the subsequent tern unless the school is notified otherwise.

CANCELLATION POLICY

If a student’s absence is recorded by 5pm on the day before the scheduled lesson, a make-up lesson will be provided.

 

If a student's absence is recorded on the day of the scheduled lesson, but before 9am, a make-up lesson cannot be guaranteed; however you will be placed on a list and we will offer you a time should one become available.

 

Notification of an absence after 9am on the day of the scheduled lesson will most likely mean the lesson will be forfeited although your earliest notification would be appreciated. 

 

Students who are enrolled in weekly lessons are afforded two make-up lessons per term while students who are enrolled in casual lessons, or commence lessons mid-term, are entitled to one make-up lesson. Make-up lessons are not available for ensemble lessons.

 

Make-up lessons cannot be rescheduled and do not roll over into the subsequent term.

 

In the unlikely event that a teacher cannot attend a lesson, a substitute teacher may be called in. If a substitute teacher is unavailable, a make-up lesson will be provided at an alternative time.
